Synthetic cubism is much different on the other hand. It has depth, as if we are looking in through a window. Analytical cubism suggests that there still is the picture plane in the space that lie beyond, that there are objects hidden from our view. The difference between the two phases of cubism is great. He proved that art could be created not only with brushes and paint but also with scissors and glue. He used different items in his paintings: newspapers, wallpaper, and cloth to name a few. Picasso used many different textures to create a collage, such as wood grain, sand, and printed matter. With synthetic cubism, texture became very important. Collage comes from the French word coller meaning to glue. Synthetic cubism is a technique called collage. The second division of cubism is called synthetic cubism. He used gothic art in his work as seen when he painted nudes. The influences of Spain gained an important place in his work and led to the development of Les Demoiselles d Avignon. This phase started after Picasso moved from Spain back to Paris. This period was powered by art imported from Africa and the South Seas.

During this period Picasso became aware of Cézanne’s art. This is when Picasso painted of circuses, actors, and prostitutes.ġ907-1909 is called the Negro period. Also, his family moved to Barcelona, Spain during this time had a heavy influence on his work. The discovery of African, Iberian, and Oceania arts appearing at the Louvre, and galleries through out Paris influenced his artwork greatly. This is when Picasso used tones of rose in his paintings. It was once said that art is a reflection of an artist’s life.įrom 1904-1906 was known as the rose period in Picasso’s career. This was an emotional time in Picasso’s life. During this period he used blue tones when he painted and his paintings showed poverty, death, and handicaps. 1901-1904 is called the blue period in Picasso’s career. Picasso went through several phases in analytical cubism. Picasso also used minimal colors in his paintings, which also emphasized the lacking light source. This was a new concept introduced to the world of art. Due to the lack of consistent light the viewer is never sure if the angles are concave or complex. Light appears to cast shadows from all different angles which are impossible in actuality. The first cubist paintings stood out because they did not use a consistent light source. For example he might paint a bottle shown in profile while the lid would be shown from the top. He felt he should analyze an object, break in down into shapes, flatten the shapes, and change the colors so that the object or human could be seen from as many angles as possible, he used multiple perspectives. Picasso broke objects into geometric shapes and used a wide variety of angles. Picasso’s analytical cubism portrayed objects as being flatter and more consistent. Synthetic cubism also focuses on the texture of each material added. Synthetic cubism is paintings created by pasting clippings from newspapers or other materials to the surface of the painting. It sought to break down objects into basic shapes of cubes, spheres, cylinders, and cones. It is geometric shapes broken into fragments that overlap one another. Analytical cubism is the earlier phase of cubism. Cubism is broken down into two divisions: analytical and, synthetic.
